Philosophy: Logical Positivism

"A twentieth-century philosophical movement that used a strict principle of verifiability to reject as meaningless the non-empirical statements of metaphysics, theology, and ethics. Under the influence of Hume, Russell, and the early Wittgenstein, the logical positivists regarded as meaningful only statements reporting empirical observations, taken together with the tautologies of logic and mathematics. Prominent logical positivists included members of the Vienna Circle and Ayer."

empirical: of experience or experiment.

tautology (logic): 1. a compound propositional form all of whose instances are true, as “A or not A.”
2. an instance of such a form, as “This candidate will win or will not win.”

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights

"The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a declaration adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 December 1948 at Palais de Chaillot, Paris. The Declaration arose directly from the experience of the Second World War and represents the first global expression of rights to which all human beings are inherently entitled. It consists of 30 articles which have been elaborated in subsequent international treaties, regional human rights instruments, national constitutions and laws.
The International Bill of Human Rights consists of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and its two Optional Protocols. In 1966 the General Assembly adopted the two detailed Covenants, which complete the International Bill of Human Rights; and in 1976, after the Covenants had been ratified by a sufficient number of individual nations, the Bill took on the force of international law."

I'm not entirely sure how it's enforced. Wikipedia states that it is "a powerful tool in applying diplomatic and moral pressure to governments that violate any of its articles."

I was interested to learn that primary education is an article:

Article 26.

  • (1) Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory. Technical and professional education shall be made generally available and higher education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit.
  • (2) Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups, and shall further the activities of the United Nations for the maintenance of peace.
  • (3) Parents have a prior right to choose the kind of education that shall be given to their children.

Lifeform: Snake-Eel

Family: Ophichthidae (Greek, "serpent-fish")
These harmless creatures are designed to look like venomous snakes, and

often hide in the sand, burrowing tail-first. They are largely nocturnal and live in warm, shallow waters. They have an excellent sense of smell, and prey on fish, cephalopods and crustaceans.
